Short answer: A casino bonus is extra play money a casino adds to your account, usually as a percentage match on your first deposit, but you can only withdraw it after you have bet a set multiple of it (the wagering requirement). Whether a bonus is worth taking depends far more on that multiple, what it is calculated on, the maximum bet and any cap on winnings than on the headline percentage.

Bonus banners are written to sell. "200% up to A$2,000" sounds generous, but the number that decides your outcome sits in the terms page: a line such as "35x (deposit + bonus)". This guide walks through each rule that shapes the value of a casino bonus, does the maths in Australian dollars, and ends with a short method you can use on any offer in a couple of minutes. When we test casinos, these are exactly the lines we copy out of the terms and put in plain English on each review.

What is a casino bonus and how does it work?

A casino bonus is credit the casino adds to your balance, on the condition that you play through it before cashing out. It is kept apart from your own money, usually as a separate "bonus balance" with its own rules. If you try to withdraw before meeting the conditions, the casino removes the bonus and often anything you won with it.

The deal for the casino is simple: the bonus brings you in and makes you bet more. Every bet carries a house edge, so the more you are required to bet, the more of that bonus the casino expects to earn back. Your task is to find out whether the expected cost of the required betting is smaller than the bonus itself. If it is, the offer has positive value on paper. If it isn't, you are paying for the extra play time.

Which types of casino bonuses will you see?

Most offers fit into a handful of shapes. The names change from site to site, but the mechanics repeat.

TypeHow it worksWhat to check first
Welcome bonus (match)A percentage of your first deposit added as bonus, e.g. 100% of A$100 = A$100 extraWagering basis and multiple
Welcome packageMatches spread over the first two to five depositsWhether each part has its own expiry
Reload bonusA smaller match for existing players, often weeklySame rules as the welcome offer, or stricter
Free spinsSpins on named pokies at a fixed stakeSpin value and wagering on winnings
No deposit bonusSmall credit or spins for signing up, no payment neededWin cap and verification before cashout
CashbackA share of net losses returned over a periodPaid as cash or as bonus with wagering

A sign up bonus and a welcome bonus usually mean the same thing: the offer tied to your first deposit. A casino deposit bonus is any match offer, first deposit or later. Free spins and no-deposit offers have their own quirks, which we cover in separate guides on free spins and the no deposit bonus.

How does casino bonus wagering work? (worked A$ examples)

The wagering requirement, also called playthrough or rollover, is the total amount you must bet before the bonus turns into withdrawable cash. It is written as a multiple, such as 35x. The key detail is what the multiple applies to. There are two common versions, and they produce very different numbers.

Example: A$100 deposit, 100% match, 35x

You deposit A$100 and receive a A$100 bonus. Your playable balance is A$200.

Wagering basisCalculationTotal you must bet
35x bonus only35 × A$100A$3,500
35x deposit + bonus35 × (A$100 + A$100)A$7,000

Same headline, same multiple, double the betting. That is why we always state the basis next to the multiple in our reviews.

What the betting costs you on average

Every game returns a little less than you put in over the long run. The share it keeps is the house edge, and it is 100% minus the return to player (RTP). As an illustration only, take a pokie that lists its RTP as 96%, which means a 4% edge. The expected cost of the wagering is the total you bet multiplied by the edge:

  • Bonus only: A$3,500 × 4% = A$140 expected cost, against a A$100 bonus. Expected result: about −A$40.
  • Deposit + bonus: A$7,000 × 4% = A$280 expected cost, against the same A$100. Expected result: about −A$180.
  • Same bonus at 10x bonus only: A$1,000 × 4% = A$40 cost. Expected result: about +A$60.

These are averages, not forecasts. Pokies are volatile, and many sessions end with the balance at zero before the wagering is done, while a few end well ahead. But the averages tell you which way the offer leans. A 35x deposit-plus-bonus deal on a 96% game leans heavily towards the house. A 10x bonus-only deal leans towards you. The RTP of the game you choose moves the result too, which is why our guide to pokies RTP matters for bonus hunters.

What is the max bet rule on a bonus?

Nearly every casino bonus comes with a maximum stake per spin or hand while the bonus is active, often a fixed dollar amount. Break it, even once and even by accident, and the casino can void the bonus and the winnings. This rule is behind a large share of bonus disputes, because many pokies let you raise the stake well above the limit with one tap.

The max bet also sets the minimum number of bets you will need. With A$3,500 to wager and an example limit of A$5 per spin, you need at least 3,500 ÷ 5 = 700 spins. At A$1 a spin it becomes 3,500 spins. That is hours of play, which links straight to the next rule: expiry.

Watch out: some terms count bonus-feature buys, gamble buttons or doubling features as breaking the max bet rule, even when the base stake is under the limit. Read the "prohibited play" section before you start.

Do win caps limit what you can withdraw?

A win cap (or max cashout) limits how much you can withdraw from bonus play, no matter how much you win. It is common on no deposit and free spins offers and appears on some match offers too. It may be written as a dollar figure or as a multiple of the bonus.

Worked example: a A$100 bonus with a cap of 5x the bonus. You clear the wagering with A$1,400 on the balance. You can withdraw A$500. The other A$900 is removed. A cap changes the maths because it cuts off the rare big wins that pay for all the sessions that bust. If you combine a cap with high wagering, the expected value of the offer drops further than the headline suggests. On a deposit offer, we treat any win cap as a serious negative.

How does game weighting change the wagering?

Not every bet counts in full towards a casino bonus. Casinos set a contribution rate per game type, and the weighting tells you what share of each bet counts towards the wagering. Pokies typically count 100%. Table games and live dealer games often count a small share or nothing at all, because their house edge is lower.

Weighting (example)A$1 bet counts asBets needed to clear A$3,500
100%A$1.00A$3,500
20%A$0.20A$17,500
10%A$0.10A$35,000
0% (excluded)A$0.00Cannot clear

Playing online blackjack at 10% weighting means betting A$35,000 to clear a A$3,500 requirement. The lower edge doesn't save you once the volume goes up tenfold. Some terms also exclude specific high-RTP pokies by name, so check that list before you pick a game.

How long do you have before a bonus expires?

Every casino bonus expires, often in two stages: a window to activate the offer, then a window to finish the wagering. If time runs out, the remaining bonus and any winnings tied to it are removed.

Turn the deadline into a daily target. A$3,500 of wagering in an example window of 7 days is A$500 a day. At A$1 spins, that is 500 spins every day for a week. If that doesn't match how you normally play, the bonus will either push you to play more than you planned or expire half done. Neither is a good outcome, so the expiry deserves as much attention as the multiple.

A deposit limit set before you claim helps keep a bonus from pulling you past your budget. Most casinos let you set one in the account area.

Sticky vs non-sticky: which deposit bonus is better?

With a deposit bonus, the order in which your money and the bonus are used makes a real difference.

Non-sticky (also called parachute): your own deposit is played first. If you win early with your own cash, you can usually withdraw and forfeit the bonus, with no wagering attached to your deposit winnings. The bonus only starts once your real balance runs out. This structure gives you a free second chance and is the better casino deposit bonus for most people.

Sticky: deposit and bonus are mixed from the start, and the bonus amount itself can never be withdrawn. It is removed when you cash out. Example: you deposit A$100, get A$100 bonus, clear the wagering and finish with A$450. The casino removes the A$100 bonus, so you receive A$350.

Non-sticky

  • Your deposit wins are yours to withdraw early
  • You can walk away from the bonus
  • Wagering only bites if you lose your own cash first

Sticky

  • Bonus amount is deducted at cashout
  • Your own deposit is locked into the wagering
  • Harder to tell when you are "ahead"

What about cashback and reload offers?

Cashback returns a share of your net losses over a period. Example: 10% cashback on a week where you lose A$200 returns A$20. The question is the form it takes. Cashback paid as real cash with no wagering is simple and honest. Cashback paid as bonus money with, say, 10x wagering is a small new bonus, with the same maths as above: A$20 × 10 = A$200 to bet, which at a 4% edge costs about A$8 on average.

A reload deposit bonus works like the welcome offer, but the match is usually smaller. Treat each one as a new decision rather than a reward. Regular reloads mean regular wagering, and the combined turnover across a month can be larger than you would bet on your own.

Is a casino bonus worth taking? A five-minute check

You don't need a spreadsheet. Run any welcome bonus through these steps before you deposit.

  1. Find the basis. Is the multiple on the bonus only, or on deposit plus bonus? Rewrite it as one dollar figure.
  2. Estimate the cost. Multiply that figure by the house edge of the game you will play (100% minus its RTP). Compare with the bonus amount.
  3. Check the limits. Max bet, win cap and excluded games. A win cap on a deposit offer is a red flag.
  4. Divide by the days. Wagering ÷ days to expiry = your daily betting target. Is it realistic for you?
  5. Check sticky or non-sticky. Non-sticky lets you keep early wins from your own deposit.

If the expected cost is larger than the bonus, or the daily target is more than you would bet anyway, decline it. Most casinos let you opt out at the deposit step, and a deposit without a bonus has no wagering at all. You can then withdraw whenever you like, which also makes fast withdrawals easier. Our fast payout casinos guide explains how bonus status can hold up a withdrawal.

Five-step check to decide whether a casino bonus is worth taking

How do bonus rules fit with Australian law?

This is neutral background, not advice. The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes online casino services a prohibited service when provided to people in Australia, and the law targets the providers, not their customers. The bonus rules on Australian-licensed betting sites are a separate matter: the National Consumer Protection Framework for online wagering includes restricted inducements as one of its ten measures, and the 2026 reform bill passed on 19 August 2026 adds limits on direct marketing of inducements, with most reforms starting on 1 January 2027. Those rules apply to licensed wagering providers. Online casino bonuses sit outside that framework, so their terms are whatever the casino writes, which is one more reason to read them line by line.

How we check bonus terms when we test a casino

When we review a casino we don't copy its bonus banner. We record the wagering multiple and its basis, the max bet, any win cap, game weightings, excluded games, expiry, whether the bonus is sticky, and whether the casino lets you decline it. We also note whether claiming a bonus delayed our test withdrawal. You can read the full method on how we review, and see the results side by side on compare casinos as each review is published.

FAQ

What is a good wagering requirement for a casino bonus?

Lower is better, and the basis matters as much as the number. A requirement of 10x to 20x on the bonus only is mild. Anything at 35x or more, especially on deposit plus bonus, means the expected cost of the betting usually exceeds the bonus on a typical pokie.

Can I withdraw my deposit before finishing the wagering?

It depends on the bonus type. With a non-sticky bonus, your own money is used first and you can usually withdraw it, forfeiting the bonus. With a sticky bonus, the deposit is tied up until the wagering is complete or you cancel the bonus.

Is a welcome bonus the same as a sign up bonus?

Usually yes. Both terms describe the offer on your first deposit. A sign up bonus sometimes refers to a no deposit offer given just for registering, so read which one is meant.

Why did the casino void my bonus winnings?

The most common reasons are going over the max bet, playing an excluded game, or the bonus expiring. Some terms also void winnings for "irregular play", such as switching to low-risk bets halfway through.

Do table games count towards casino bonus wagering?

Often only partly. Table and live dealer games commonly count a small share, or are excluded. At 10% weighting you need ten times the betting to clear the same requirement.

Should I always decline a bonus?

No. Low wagering, no win cap and a non-sticky structure can make a bonus genuinely useful. Decline the ones where the expected cost is larger than the bonus or the deadline doesn't fit how you play.
